A Canadian MP Sharing the Panel with a Genocide Denier
Dear friends,
It’s this time of the year, again, that we have to fight for human rights
It’s this time of the year, again, that we have to fight against denialists
It’s this time of the year, again, that we have to be together, united
Last year, a Genocide denier, was present in one of our universities. We, as human activists stood against such an event even
though we believed in freedom of speech. The Professor Ataov event took place, but he felt that he was not welcomed in
Canada.
On January 26th, Justin McCarthy will be in Montreal.
Justin McCarthy, Professor of history - University of Louisville, Author of Death and Exile: the ethnic cleansing of Ottoman
Muslims, 1821-1922 and The Armenian Rebellion at Van.
Justin McCarthy dedicated all of his life lobbying against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. He wrote several books in
which he accused the Armenians of being liars and terrorists.
But this time, the nature of the event is different. Justin McCarthy is invited to the 3rd Canadian Turkish Youth Council that will
take place in Montreal. What is more saddening is, that the podium will be shared by Mr. Justin Trudeau, a Canadian MP.
Does Mr Trudeau have a slight idea of who Mr. Justin McCarthy is? Does Mr Trudeau know that he is taking part of an event
that will preach denial and hatred?
The main aim of the Turkish Canadian Youth Council is to provide “A better and truthful understanding of the Turkish heritage,
history, culture and values”. But which truth are we talking about?
We, as Canadian Armenian Students, voice our profound shock and indignation to see a Canadian MP sharing the panel with
a Genocide Denier. How can a Canadian MP, who is supposed to represent all Canadians in the parliament, agree with a
Genocide Denier, when his government has accepted the Armenian Genocide?
So, just as last year, we promise to you that we will take the burden to fight against injustice and, the same way that we
succeeded last year, promise a second round success in fighting against the unaccepted.
Sincerely,
Kevork Kazanjian
